By now, we should have all completed the Excel Assignement. If you still haven't completed the assignment, it is homework due tomorrow.

We're going to spend a few minutes printing up the 3 graphs from the Excel assignment. After you print them, place your name at the top before you hand them in to me.

For the rest of class today, we're going to revisit the Engineering Career Reports. Like I said a few days ago, the next step is to add job info and college prep info to the reports.

Technical Writing

...OK... Unit 2, which we are studying now, is all about communication and documentation.

We've finished with our refresher lessons on engineering sketches. We'll have a quiz over sketching on Friday. It will cover all topics covered in the Sketching PowerPoint.

We're going to move onto technical writing today. Let's first take a look at a [drab, brief, pltw] PowerPoint. Sorry...

We'll then be referencing the following documents:
These documents willalso be located in shared/pltw/howard/unit2/

After I'm done spinning my wheels about technical writing, answer the following in a comment to this blog.
  • What does technical writing mean and what are the benefits of its use?

.

Finishing up Orthographics

We'll spend about half of today finishing the orthographic projection assignments.

After you're done with those assignments, answer the following in a comment to this blog posting:

1.      How do they know Leonardo Da Vinci came up with the concepts of the parachute and helicopter?

2.      The mayor of your town has asked you and two friends to design a sitting area in the town park. He would like to speak with you next week about your concepts. What types of sketches should you bring to the meeting to be sure he understands your ideas?

3.      When working on new concepts and ideas why do you need to keep records?

4.      If you have a CAD system why learn how to sketch?

Engineering Career Reports

First of all, I apologize for the terrible PowerPoint yesterday. I promise to never to give another PLTW presentation that isn't edited first.

Now that we all have chosen our particular fields, we can do a little bit of internet research. The two main points I want you to focus on are the following:
  • Description of the field (Field Report) - 1+ page
  • Areas of specialization - 1+ page
Make sure that you keep track of and cite your internet sources! Don't get all your info from just one source; you should have at least 3 or 4.

Just as a reminder, here again are the assigned career fields:
  • Joe F - Mechanical Engineering
  • Mike D - Computer Engineering
  • Jessica M - Medical Engineering
  • Andrew C - Architectural Engineering
  • Collin M - Aeronautical Engineering
  • Zach S - Nano Engineering
  • Eric H - Automobile Engineering
  • Chad W - Nuclear Engineering
  • Nadia G - Chemical Engineering
  • Oshe H - Industrial Engineering
  • John B - Structural Engineering
  • Jacob W - Civil Engineering
  • Dale C - Combat Engineering
I'll give you 2 days (today & tomorrow) to work on this.

.

Careers in Engineering

We have a brief(ish) PowerPoint on engineering career fields. After we finish the slideshow, I'll be giving you all a few minutes to choose two engineering fields that you'd like to research, one primary field, one alternate field. The written report will ultimately be quite lengthy. Luckily for you, I'll be assigning the report in smaller sections. Trust me, reports are much less mind numbing done in this way.

Get ready for a super-mega-uber-awesome black-and-white PowerPoint! Woot!

History of Engineering

Guten Tag [German for "Good Day"]

After the PowerPoint, answer the following:

1) Describe what you think might have been the greatest invention of all time (not including the last two hundred years).

2) Describe an instance when you have invented anything or found a solution that has been useful to others.

.

In the beginning...

We're going to start off the day by making sure that you can post comments to this blog...

I'm going to allow anonymous posts so that you don't have to get the Google account we spoke about yesterday.

Take a moment to answer the question from yesterday's blog while I set up.

Welcome Back

This is the POE blog page.

Check this page daily for assignments, resources, 'n other shtuff.

We're going to go here for classroom policies.

Your homework for tomorrow is to create a Google account so that you can post future comments to this blog. To get credit for your first assignment, you must post a comment answering the following question.

Who is your favorite inventor? Why?
